Pledge Our Support to Earth Hour 2008!

On March 29, 2008, exactly 5 days from now, a Second Earth Hour will be held in Sydney, Melbourne, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Tel Aviv and other cities. Now, one might ask, it is my first time to hear the word Earth Hour, where has it originated? What do Earth Hour mean?
It all began with a question on how to inspire people to take action on climate change. An environmental lobby group,
World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature Australia, and the Sydney Morning Herald promoted Earth Hour and asked households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour on a March evening to promote electricity conservation and thus lower carbon emissions (Wilkipedia.org).
The First Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on March 31, 2007. The 2007 Earth Hour is estimated to have cut Sydney's main electricity consumption by between 2.1% and 10.2% for that hour, with as many as 2.2 million people taking part. In this event, the world took notice and made an impact in inspiring people to take action on climate change.
On March 29, 2008, Australians will be again spearheading the world for the Second Earth Hour. So far, seven countries, seven cities and still growing, have already expressed their intention to join this big event.
We can all take part to make Earth Hour 2008 a huge success. This crusade might be very trivial but it could start at our very own homes. In our own little way, we can contribute to influence an environmental change in the world by dimming our households on a Saturday night. What could be lost??? I don't think there will be any. Vehicle owners could stop using their transport for an hour just to put a halt to the gases spewing from their vehicles. We badly need to send a message to everyone that we need to act now and March 29 is the date set for the entire human kind to unite. Let us all be counted as one!
